Palatal Expansion & Early Age Orthodontics in Wagga Wagga

Using palatal expansion and partial braces, we create space, improve the bite, guide healthy jaw growth and may help improve the airway - and the optimal time to influence these is while your child is still growing.

What Is Palatal Expansion & Early Age Orthodontics (Phase 1)

Palatal expansion is a type of early orthodontic treatment, also known as Phase 1 orthodontics. It helps guide the way your child’s teeth and jaws grow while they’re still young. At Elevate Dental Wagga Wagga, we look for developing problems early and treat them before they become harder to fix.

A palatal expander (sometimes called a palate expander) is a small appliance that gently widens the upper jaw over time. This can create more space, reduce crowding, and help the upper and lower teeth fit together better. Because it works best while your child is still growing, it’s the ideal time to encourage healthy jaw development and make room for the adult teeth. In some children, creating more space in the upper jaw may also help improve the airway.

Phase 1 treatment focuses on specific problems while your child is still growing – things like guiding new teeth into place, creating space, and improving the bite. Starting early can also make any future orthodontic treatment simpler and support healthier long-term development.

4 Benefits of Palatal Expansion & Phase 1 Treatment In Wagga Wagga

1. Creates Space for Adult Teeth

When the upper jaw is too narrow, there often isn't enough room for the adult teeth to come through properly. A palatal expander gently widens the upper jaw to make that space. Creating room early helps reduce crowding, supports a straighter smile, and gives the adult teeth a better chance to come through where they should - which can mean simpler orthodontic treatment down the track.

2. May Support Better Breathing and Airway Health

Palatal expansion may support nasal breathing by widening the upper jaw and nasal passage. Some children who experience mouth breathing may notice improvements in breathing and sleep following treatment. This can support greater comfort and wellbeing as your child grows.

3. Improves Bite and Jaw Balance

Phase 1 treatment can help address bite problems early, including anterior crossbites and narrow upper jaws. It can improve the alignment of the upper teeth and support more balanced jaw development for better function and comfort as your child grows.

4. Reduces Need for Complex Treatment

Early treatment may reduce the need for more complex orthodontic treatment later in adolescence. It can help simplify future braces or Invisalign® treatment and support a healthier, more balanced smile as your child grows.

Who Is a Good Candidate?

Signs your child may benefit from early care.

Many children can benefit from early orthodontic assessment, particularly while the jaws and teeth are still developing. We look for early signs of orthodontic problems that may affect your child’s bite, smile and overall oral health.

At Elevate Dental Wagga Wagga, we care for children and families at every stage of dental development. An orthodontic assessment around age 7 can help identify developing problems early, when your child’s jaws are still growing and certain treatments, such as expansion, may be more effective.

An early assessment allows us to determine the best timing for treatment and create a plan based on your child’s individual needs. Treatment options may include a palatal expander, braces, or Invisalign®. While some children may still require further orthodontic treatment later, early intervention can help make future treatment more straightforward in appropriate cases.

If you notice any early signs of orthodontic problems, it’s worth having your child assessed. Early orthodontic care can help address developing bite problems, support healthy dental development, and set the foundation for a confident, healthy smile.

Our Palatal Expansion (Phase 1) Results

The Process of Getting Palatal Expansion

What To Expect Step by Step

Step 1: Consultation & assessment

One of our dentists will examine your child’s teeth, jaw and bite, and take X-rays and a digital scan. We look at how your child is growing to decide whether Phase 1 treatment is needed, and if so, the best time to start and the right plan for them.

Step 2: Fitting the expander
We fit a custom-made palatal expander to the upper teeth. At home, you’ll gently turn the expander with a small key as instructed, which slowly and safely widens the upper jaw to create space. Fitting the expander is comfortable and pain-free.

Step 3: Aligning & retaining
Once we’ve created enough space, we usually use partial braces or aligners to move the teeth into the right positions – including guiding the canine teeth, which are often the trickiest. When everything’s in place, a retainer holds the results and protects the work we’ve done.

FAQs

It’s normal to feel some gentle pressure in the first few days – that just means the expander is doing its job. Most children adjust within a few days and are soon back to their normal routine.

Phase 1 treatment usually takes 10-14 months. The exact length depends on your child’s age, growth and the issues being treated.

It depends on how your child’s adult teeth come through. Many children do go on to braces or Invisalign later – and most teens choose Invisalign/Clear Aligners at this stage. Because the more complex work has already been done in Phase 1, this later phase is usually just rotating and tidying up the adult teeth as they finish coming through.

And if you choose to do Phase 2 with us after completing Phase 1, we offer it at a significantly reduced fee.

Every child’s treatment is a little different, so the cost varies – but Phase 1 is usually in the range of $4,000–$6,000. After the assessment we’ll give you a clear quote with no surprises, and we’re happy to set up a payment plan. We also accept most health funds.

Brush after meals, floss daily, and avoid hard or sticky foods. Some soreness after adjustments is normal. Use wax for any rubbing, and wear a mouthguard for sport.

You’ll need to wear retainers—either removable or fixed—to keep your teeth in place. Regular check-ups help maintain your new smile.
