Why wisdom teeth become a problem for most people?

Wisdom teeth — the third molars at the very back of the mouth — typically emerge in the late teens or early twenties. For many people, there simply is not enough room in the jaw for these teeth to come through correctly. When this happens, they may become impacted — partially or fully trapped beneath the gum or against the adjacent tooth — leading to pain, infection, crowding and damage to surrounding teeth.

Not all wisdom teeth need to be removed. Some come through without issue and cause no ongoing problems. But when wisdom teeth are impacted, sitting at an angle, causing repeated infections or creating pressure that affects the rest of the mouth, removal is usually the most straightforward long-term solution. An assessment with X-rays gives your dentist the information needed to advise you honestly on whether intervention is necessary and when the right time to act is.

From Assessment to Recovery — What the Process Looks Like

1. Wisdom Tooth Assessment and X-Rays

Your dentist will examine the affected area and take dental X-rays — typically an OPG panoramic X-ray — to assess the position, angle and root structure of your wisdom teeth and their relationship to surrounding teeth and nerves. This determines the complexity of removal and whether it can be performed in-clinic or requires referral to an oral surgeon.

2. Discussion of Treatment & Comfort Options

We will discuss all your available treatment options including an thorough assessment & discussion on whether your wisdom teeth do indeed need to be removed or not. Wisdom tooth removal is generally performed under local anaesthetic so the area is numb before any treatment begins. If you are anxious about the procedure, we will discuss what comfort options such as IV sedation or General Anesthetics which are available.

3. Wisdom tooth Removal and Socket Care

Once the area is numb, the wisdom tooth is loosened and removed. For partially erupted or impacted teeth, a small incision in the gum may be required to access the tooth fully. The socket is then cleaned and, where appropriate, sutured to support healing. You will receive detailed aftercare instructions before leaving the clinic.

4. Recovery Support & Review

We will support your recovery journey through follow-up phone and in-person reviews, to ensure that the area has healed uneventfully and you are back to normal function!

Signs Your Wisdom Teeth May Need to Come Out

Wisdom tooth problems do not always start with obvious pain. Some people experience pressure, mild swelling or recurring bad breath long before acute pain develops — and by the time discomfort becomes significant, the situation has often been developing for some time. Here are the signs that warrant an assessment sooner rather than later.

If you have swelling affecting your jaw, difficulty opening your mouth fully, or swelling that feels like it is spreading, contact the clinic promptly.

One of the most common patterns we see with wisdom teeth is patients waiting until the pain becomes severe before seeking an assessment. This is entirely understandable — but earlier intervention almost always leads to a simpler procedure, a faster recovery and fewer complications. Wisdom tooth roots are typically shorter and less fully formed in younger adults, which makes removal more straightforward. As patients get older, the roots deepen and the procedure can become more complex.

FAQs

No. Not every wisdom tooth requires removal. If a wisdom tooth has fully erupted, is correctly positioned, is easy to clean and is not causing any problems, it may be monitored rather than removed. Removal is typically recommended when a wisdom tooth is impacted, causing recurring infections, damaging the adjacent tooth, contributing to crowding, or creating an area that cannot be kept adequately clean. An assessment with X-rays is the only way to know for certain what is appropriate.

Most patients recover from a straightforward extraction within three to five days. More complex removals — particularly of impacted teeth — may involve a longer recovery period of up to a week or two. Swelling, mild bruising and some restriction in mouth opening are common in the first few days. Following the aftercare instructions carefully — including dietary changes and keeping the socket clean — significantly supports a smooth recovery.

Dry socket occurs when the blood clot that forms in the extraction socket is dislodged or dissolves before the wound has healed, exposing the underlying bone and causing significant pain. It is more common in lower wisdom tooth extractions. To reduce the risk, avoid smoking, drinking through a straw, vigorous rinsing and spitting for the first 48 hours after removal. If you develop worsening pain several days after extraction rather than improving pain, contact the clinic promptly.

In some cases, yes — particularly if all four are causing problems and the patient is well-suited to a longer appointment under local anaesthetic. Removing multiple teeth in one visit means a single recovery period rather than multiple ones. Your dentist will advise on what is appropriate based on the complexity of each tooth and your individual health circumstances.

If you are experiencing persistent jaw pain, gum swelling at the back of the mouth, recurring bad taste or infections, difficulty opening your mouth, or if a partially erupted wisdom tooth has appeared, do not wait for the situation to worsen. Book an assessment as soon as possible. If swelling is spreading to your jaw or neck, or if you are having difficulty breathing or swallowing, call 000 or go to your nearest emergency department immediately.
