Fixing an Overbite in Wagga Wagga
A deep or protruding front bite is common in children and adults, and very treatable. Several proven routes get you there: customised orthodontic plates, clear aligners (Invisalign) or braces, and we'll help you choose the one that fits.
Why Correcting an Overbite Is Worth It
A better-looking smile is why most people start, but correcting an overbite also protects the teeth doing the work. When the top teeth bite too far over the bottom, the front teeth take uneven force and can chip, wear down or loosen over time.
Â
In children especially, catching a deep bite early lets us guide the jaw while it’s still growing, which often means simpler treatment.
Â
At our Wagga Wagga clinic, we correct overbites for patients of all ages right across the Riverina, with plates, braces and Invisalign available under one roof.
Types of Overbite & When To Act
"Overbite" covers a few different things. If any of these sound familiar in your child or yourself, a quick consult will tell you exactly what's going on.
What an Overbite Looks Like
- Top front teeth covering the bottom ones
- Front teeth that stick out or protrude
- A deep bite where lower teeth hit the gum
- Bottom teeth you can barely see
- A gummy look from the upper teeth
Reasons To Sort It Out
- Chipping or wear on the front teeth
- Lower teeth biting into the roof of the mouth
- Jaw tension, clicking or headaches
- A child feeling self-conscious about protruding teeth
- Trouble biting cleanly through food
What Causes an Overbite?
Usually it comes down to how the jaws and teeth developed, plus a few childhood habits that deepen the bite over time. Whatever the cause, the fix is the same: guide the teeth and bite gently back into balance.
Â
- A lower jaw that sits back or grew smaller than the upper one.
- Genetics, jaw size and bite pattern run in families.
- Childhood habits, thumb-sucking or prolonged dummy use.
- Missing back teeth, the bite collapses and deepens over time.
- Grinding and clenching, which can wear teeth and deepen an existing overbite.

FAQs
Earlier is better. We recommend a first orthodontic check around age 7 to 8, while the jaw is still growing, even if treatment doesn’t start straight away. Catching a deep bite early often means we can guide the jaw with a simple plate and keep later treatment shorter. If your child is older, or fully grown, it’s still very treatable.
None is universally “better”, they suit different ages and bites. Customised plates work beautifully for growing children, gently guiding the jaw as it develops. Invisalign is discreet and removable and suits many teen and adult overbites, but only works if it’s worn 20–22 hours a day. Braces are fixed and handle deeper, more complex bites. At the consult we recommend the right fit, with costs for each.
Most cases take between 12 and 24 months, though plate treatment in a growing child can run gently alongside their development. A mild overbite with clear aligners can finish in well under a year; deeper bites take longer. And if you do Phase 2 with us after Phase 1, we offer it at a significantly reduced fee.
No, healthy teeth can be moved at almost any age, and adults are one of our fastest-growing groups. Plates suit younger, growing patients, while aligners and braces work well for adults, whether you’re in your 30s, 40s or beyond. The main requirement is healthy gums and bone, which we check at the consult.
You’ll feel some pressure or tenderness for a day or two after braces are adjusted or when you change to a new aligner, that’s the teeth moving, and it settles quickly. It’s very manageable, and most people get used to the routine fast.
You’ll need to wear retainers—either removable or fixed—to keep your teeth in place. Regular check-ups help maintain your new smile.
